With designer sushi restaurants evolving into chic hotspots and weekend destinations, it can be difficult to find high-end execution and creativity sans the “scene."
That is, until South Coast. The South Loop sister of Bucktown’s Coast, South Coast remains true to its roots while revealing an interior space and design straight out of Elle Décor. Coupling ambience with fantastically delicious sushi, South Coast keeps diners ordering even after they’re full. While it’s true that faithful frequenters of South Coast will surely travel any distance to try the latest addition on South Michigan, the charm of South Coast is its neighborhood feel and love of the locals. The signature makis made famous in Bucktown are still staples in the South Loop, although South Coast offers a few additional items that are already making headlines: the South Scallop, pan-fried scallop in garlic-wasabi sauce, sandwiched in a dynamite roll; and the Banana Maki, a dessert that is only given justice by tasting because it is a little bit of heaven. South Coast is a gem, nothing short of brilliant—and even that may be an understatement.
